- Description: In Contrast, Space, Harmony, Australian designer Tamsin Johnson proves that the most compelling rooms aren't the most matched ones — they're the ones where an 18th-century French commode gets to sit next to a piece of minimalist art and somehow, everything makes sense.

## A Designer Who Trusts the Old Alongside the New

There's a particular kind of interior that looks effortless and is, in fact, the opposite — rooms built over years of looking, sourcing, and knowing exactly when to stop. Tamsin Johnson has built a career on that instinct, and her new monograph, *Tamsin Johnson: Contrast, Space, Harmony* (Rizzoli, released 17 March 2026), is the clearest articulation yet of how she gets there.

It's the follow-up to her well-received debut, *Spaces for Living*, and where that first book introduced Johnson's aesthetic to a wider audience, this one goes deeper. Co-authored with Stephanie Cornish, it moves through never-before-seen residential projects spanning laid-back urban homes and sun-bleached coastal retreats, with a throughline that gives the book its title: contrast, space, and harmony, held in careful tension.

## The Antiques Are the Argument

Johnson grew up the child of an antiques dealer in Melbourne, and that upbringing is doing quiet, structural work throughout this book. It's not nostalgia — it's methodology. Her signature move, page after page, is placing something old and storied next to something spare and contemporary: a vintage chandelier over a stripped-back modern room, an ornate French commode beneath a single piece of minimalist art. The friction is the point. It's what stops a beautiful room from becoming a forgettable one.

After training at London's Inchbald School of Design and cutting her teeth at a Sydney design firm, Johnson opened her own practice in 2013 out of a showroom in Paddington, Sydney. More than a decade on, Tamsin Johnson Interior Design has work across Australia, New York, Paris, and London — and this book reads like a record of a practice that's grown more confident in its own instincts, not further from them.

## What You Actually Get

This isn't a coffee-table book that skims the surface for the sake of pretty pictures. Alongside the photography — and there's a lot of it, all shot with the kind of light and restraint that makes a room feel inhabited rather than staged — Johnson offers real insight into her process: how she balances formality with ease, how she decides what stays and what goes, and how a house earns its sense of narrative rather than having one imposed on it.

## Who It's For

If you're drawn to interiors that feel collected rather than curated-to-death — if you'd rather layer one good found piece into a room than fill it with twelve new ones — this book is going to feel like a permission slip. It's equally useful as a working reference for anyone renovating or decorating, and as pure, slow-looking inspiration for anyone who just likes rooms that reward a second glance.
